Direct Care

Traditional Care vs Direct Care

Direct Care Benefits, Direct Pay, patient focused, available
Direct Care is a revolutionary approach to healthcare that puts you, the patient, at the forefront.

Unlike traditional healthcare models, where patients often face long wait times, limited access to specialists, and a lack of personalized attention, Direct Care offers a unique solution that prioritizes your individual needs.
At its core, Direct Care removes the barriers that often hinder timely and comprehensive healthcare. By establishing a direct relationship between you and your specialist, this model enables you to bypass unnecessary layers of bureaucracy and streamline your healthcare experience.

"I'm committed to managing your condition for the long haul, so you can enjoy lasting health and vitality."

~ Sylvia Rivera MD

Santa Barbara Endocrinology is a Direct Care Endocrinology practice. The first of its kind in Santa Barbara County. We see patients with a multitude of endocrine conditions including diabetes, thyroid disease, reproductive conditions in women (including PCOS and menopause) and men (low testosterone), as well as adrenal and pituitary disease. We also provide weight management care.

Direct care is a healthcare model that places the patient at the forefront by eliminating the intermediary, typically the insurance company, from the doctor-patient interaction. In direct care, you will work directly with your physician who accepts a limited patient load in order to improve accessibility and meet your ongoing needs.

Because insurance is not used in any form, we are able to treat you from year to year, even if your coverage changes. This gives us the freedom to provide a wide range of services and focus only on you and the quality of your care.

With the Santa Barbara Endocrinology membership model, you can expect comprehensive care that goes beyond just addressing symptoms. Dr. Rivera can spend more time with you during appointments, leading to thorough examination, detailed discussions, and comprehensive treatment strategies. This approach fosters a deeper understanding of your health and promotes proactive measures to maintain your well-being.

We do not participate with any insurance plan.

Additionally, Dr. Rivera is opted out of Medicare. Our services will be billed directly to you and cannot be submitted to Medicare for reimbursement.

Our priority and focus are on the patient alone. However, in order to complete this mission, we must stand alone, without third party payors.

It is advisable that you call your insurance company to determine eligibility and requirements for reimbursement prior to your visit.

You may be able to use your insurance to cover the costs of labs, imaging, or other tests to the extent that your insurance regularly reimburses these services. You are responsible for understanding your plan’s policies.

Yes. Because your membership agreement with us is not insurance, you will want insurance coverage for those services not included in your membership.
